HELIUM IN NATURAL GAS

Helium is typically found in natural gas deposits as a trace component. It is usually present in very low concentrations, ranging from a few parts per million (ppm) to a few percent, depending on the specific gas field.

The primary source of helium in natural gas comes from the decay of radioactive elements, such as uranium and thorium, in the Earth’s crust. These elements release alpha particles as they decay, and those particles can capture electrons from surrounding atoms, forming helium atoms.

Over millions of years, helium atoms migrate through the porous rock layers in the Earth’s crust and eventually accumulate in underground natural gas reservoirs. When natural gas is extracted, the helium is also released along with the gas, processed, and used for various applications, including scientific research, industrial processes, and medical applications.

Helium is a non-renewable resource, as once it is released into the atmosphere, it tends to escape into space due to its lightness. Therefore, helium recovery from natural gas sources is crucial to ensure its availability for future use.

TESTING FOR HELIUM

To test for the presence of helium in natural gas, several methods can be employed. 

Gas chromatography is a widely used method for analyzing the composition of gas samples, including natural gas. The technique involves separating the different components of a gas mixture based on their interaction with a stationary phase inside a chromatography column.

In the case of helium detection, the gas sample is injected into the chromatograph, and the components are separated as they travel through the column. Helium, being the lightest component, typically elutes early in the analysis. The separated components are then detected by a detector, such as a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) or a mass spectrometer (MS). The detector signals the presence of helium in the gas sample, and the concentration can be determined based on the peak area or intensity.

While these states are known for their helium production, helium can also be found in natural gas fields in other regions around the world. However, these states in the U.S. are recognized as significant contributors to helium production.
